Foi uma das bandas percussoras da cena Death Metal nos EUA e mundial, fundada em 1983.

A banda teve início quando o guitarrista e vocalista Chuck Schuldiner e o guitarrista Rick Rozz se juntaram ao baterista e vocalista Barney "Kam" Lee para formarem primeiramente o Mantas. Posteriormente fundaram o Death com a intenção de fazer um som mais rápido e pesado... e aos poucos foram introduzindo a progressividade nas músicas.

Foram gravados sete álbuns de estúdio até a morte de Chuck Schuldiner, devido a complicações decorrentes do tratamento de um tumor cerebral. Os demais integrantes optaram por encerrar as atividades do Death em função do seu fundador ter falecido, depois de lançarem dois registros ao vivo.
